Update from Principal Thomas

Dear Denver South Students and Families,

Recently, a national trend on TikTok has encouraged students around the country to vandalize and steal items from their schools. We have seen a spike in this type of destructive behavior here at South and as a result, it has created a significant expense for the school. Additionally, this is a health and safety issue because students have been targeting hygiene supplies such as feminine products, soap, and paper towel dispensers

Vandalism and theft are illegal and can have serious disciplinary and legal consequences for students who participate. It also negatively affects the learning and safety environment for all students. Please take a few minutes to talk to your student about having pride in the community and not taking part in this type of activity.

As an important reminder, Denver South stands with victims of sexual assault and we encourages our entire community to stand up and speak out against sexual violence. We are here for you. Linked here are resources  to support you and your student.

Attendance Policy: Please click here to review the Denver South Attendance Policy.

Early Pickup: Students will not be released from school without a note signed by a parent/guardian. If you need to pick your student up early, please first stop in the Main Office and our office staff will call your student to the office.

If your student needs to be released from school and you are unable to

retrieve them, please send a SIGNED note to the Main Office with your student on the day of early release.

New Administration: Please help us welcome our new interim Assistant Principal, Jen Warren. She joins our team bringing a wide array of experience in education, and is excited and eager to join the Denver South community. She looks forward to learning much about the students and staff, as well as bringing her skill set to contribute to our school community.

Have a great weekend!

BESS Information & Parent Survey

As part of our effort to support the Whole Child, our school is implementing a universal social and emotional screening for students. Please complete the questionnaire by 10/22.

Reoccurring Information

As mentioned previously, we are currently experiencing a statewide shortage of substitute teachers. We are actively looking for community members to join our team. If you are looking for an opportunity to earn some money and give back to our school, we have openings for:

  • Substitute/Guest Teachers:  If you have a sub license, or ability to obtain one, and are interested in being a daily substitute teacher,  please reach out to Beth Strickland at elizabeth_strickland@dpsk12.org.  You can also visit our district site for more information.
  • Crossing Guards: If you are looking for just a few hours per day, consider becoming a crossing guard.  You can find more information linked here.

Dress Code Feedback

At this time we are starting the process of developing a new non-binaray/non-gender specific dress code. We would like feedback from student leadership groups, administrators, staff, and parents/guardians over the next couple of weeks. Please take some time and Click here to give us your feedback.

Until we have common language and proper visual representation of what the dress code will be at South High School, you might get phone calls if your student is found in violation of current dress code policies. We have, and will continue to provide shirts if students are found to be wearing clothing that shows too much skin in sensitive areas.

Health and Safety Reminder:

Please remember to come to school each day with an approved mask (no gaiters).  A well-fitting mask that goes over the mouth and nose is required for everyone to enter the building. If you are unable to provide your own mask, just ask at the front door or main office. As a reminder, all teachers will also have masks available in their classrooms. At this time, parents and families are not allowed in the building unless an appointment has been previously scheduled.
